Design Story

Carlos Motta

Carlos Motta

For over 35 years Carlos Motta has been immersed in design and architecture; with his passion for the craft as strong as ever. In 1976, armed \with an architectural degree, Motta moved to Santa Cruz California, spending a year and a half studying wood working and iron work. Describing it as a “powerful magnet”, Carlos was drawn in by the counter culture movement, organic food, yoga and of course the surf. Drawing on these influences Motta has and continues to create utilitarian furniture pieces and shelters, understanding that the needs of all of us are very similar and are repeated from one generation to the next.

Motta’s return to Brazil in 1978 saw the beginning of Atelier Carlos Motta; focusing on the design and execution of furniture, art objects and architecture. Today, the maturity of Motta’s work is evident; collaborating on projects with the likes of Oscar Niemeyer, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Isay Weinfeld and Richard Meier. His work has also been exhibited globally. Carlos Motta’s furniture designs are being shown for the first time in Canada exclusively at AVENUE ROAD.

AVENUE ROAD carries a curated assortment of Carlos Motta pieces.
