White Splash, 2018 - SOLD

Paintings

The Berlin-based artist Gregor Hildebrandt transforms the analog relics of recording technology—like VHS, cassettes, and vinyl records—into sculptures, paintings, photographs and installations. With WHITE SPLASH, Hildebrandt has created painting with his signature process. He has applied the ribbon from inside a VHS tape to a canvas prepared with an adhesive medium. He then pulled away the ribbon, leaving only the magnetic coating that was carried on the ribbon.

Gregor Hildebrandt

Gregor Hildebrandt is a contemporary artist based in Berlin. His most memorable creations are made from analog music hardware such as VCR and cassette tapes and vinyl. He layers these monochromatic creations into portraits, seascapes, and innumerable abstractions. Gregor’s art, and his choice of materials, stimulates nostalgia in the viewer. Rather than anonymous bits of analog storage media, the component parts of his art are carefully selected pieces of music or cinema, which are often referenced in the title of the work.

Peter Marino, the celebrated architect who is widely credited with redefining modern luxury through equal emphasis on architecture and interior design, has used Gregor Hildebrandt’s art in many of his most prominent projects.

Hildebrandt has been the subject of numerous museum shows, including at the Centre Pompidou, the ICA Boston, and the Bass Museum of Art. He is represented by Jan Wentrup Gallery, Almine Rech Gallery and Perrotin Gallery.

AVENUE ROAD carries a curated assortment of Gregor Hildebrandt pieces.
