Brand Highlight

Etel

The Design Collection comprises one century of Brazilian furniture. With its pioneering reedition work, ETEL brings back graceful designs of the modern Brazilian production - which was only discovered lately and is now considered as one of the most relevant worldwide for that period. Pieces characterized by skillful handiwork and the use of exquisite materials, created by architects and artists intent on unveiling the local culture, under the influence of the international avant-garde. This retrieval is based on a strict methodology, faithfulness to the originals, and intensive collaboration with the institutes and families that represent each creator’s oeuvre. The collection includes pieces by Oscar Niemeyer, Lina Bo Bardi, Jorge Zalszupin, Sergio Rodrigues, Oswaldo Bratke, Branco & Preto and Giuseppe Scapinelli, among others. The modern legacy continues with remarkable contemporary creators such as Isay Weinfeld, Arthur de Mattos Casas, Claudia Moreira Salles, Carlos Motta, Etel Carmona, Lia Siqueira and Dado Castello Branco.

Designer Highlight

Carlos Motta

For over 35 years Carlos Motta has been immersed in design and architecture; with his passion for the craft as strong as ever. In 1976, armed with an architectural degree, Motta moved to Santa Cruz California, spending a year and a half studying wood working and iron work. Describing it as a “powerful magnet”, Carlos was drawn in by the counter culture movement, organic food, yoga and of course the surf. Drawing on these influences Motta has and continues to create utilitarian furniture pieces and shelters, understanding that the needs of all of us are very similar and are repeated from one generation to the next. Motta’s return to Brazil in 1978 saw the beginning of Atelier Carlos Motta; focusing on the design and execution of furniture, art objects and architecture. Today, the maturity of Motta’s work is evident; collaborating on projects with the likes of Oscar Niemeyer, Paulo Mendes da Rocha, Isay Weinfeld and Richard Meier. His work has also been exhibited globally. Carlos Motta’s furniture designs are being shown for the first time in Canada exclusively at AVENUE ROAD.
