Brand Highlight

Van Rossum

At Van Rossum, they owe their extensive knowledge of oak to a special close relationship with their French supplier. The people who work there go into the forest every day. They know every tree and as a result, they know exactly what is being sold at the auctions held by the French National Forestry Services. Some 5 -10 years after planting young saplings, the National Forestry Service selects the stronger trees that will be allowed to mature. An interim selection is made 20 years later, and the final selection follows after another 30 years. The trees that eventually remain are free to grow to an age of about 100 years before literally facing the axe. It is a time consuming process, whereby man creates the optimum growing conditions for a tree, but nature sets the pace.

Designer Highlight

Xavier Dohr Studio

Xavier developed this 3-dimensional approach at the École supérieure d’art appliqué textile (ESAAT) in Lille where he mastered textile creation and furthered his sensitivity to colors and materials. The Xavier Dohr Studio was founded with strong quality and aesthetic goals. Special projects were made for clients and appeared in many magazines. The Veronese Company commissioned Xavier to create a chandelier made in Murano by their own glass blowers. One of them is displayed in Carla Bruni’s elegant Parisian home in the 16th arrondissement of Paris. Xavier’s chairs, are enjoyed in many places, including Bernard Arnault’s dining room in Paris and London. Media shy like many creatives, Dohr prefers to let his work speak for itself. "The confrontation of materials colors and proportions is key to my work without over accentuating or dramatizing. Nothing should in the end compromise the comfort of using them. A very good cake tastes better than an over-decorated one with a dull flavor", he concludes.
