Brand Highlight

Van Rossum

At Van Rossum, they owe their extensive knowledge of oak to a special close relationship with their French supplier. The people who work there go into the forest every day. They know every tree and as a result, they know exactly what is being sold at the auctions held by the French National Forestry Services. Some 5 -10 years after planting young saplings, the National Forestry Service selects the stronger trees that will be allowed to mature. An interim selection is made 20 years later, and the final selection follows after another 30 years. The trees that eventually remain are free to grow to an age of about 100 years before literally facing the axe. It is a time consuming process, whereby man creates the optimum growing conditions for a tree, but nature sets the pace.

Designer Highlight

Erjan Borren

For a little over a decade, Amsterdam-based design studio Erjan Borren has made its unique mark on a plethora of residences, offices and public spaces in all corners of the globe. The studio stands out from the crowd with its intuitive application of solely authentic materials. But also with the furniture and outstanding art that it specially sources for each project, which all comes together to subtly lend spaces an identity of their own. Erjan Borren is also an art historian, and his keen eye and boundless knowledge of the field bring an extra dimension to his interior design. It goes without saying that interiors should be attractive, distinctive and comfortable, but Borren always seeks a certain nonchalance, adding another complementary layer to a space. Authenticity that gives an interior depth, whether it’s a classical design for a country house or contemporary chic for a modern urban apartment. His furniture stems from his interior design work: its genesis lies as much in space as in shape, and responds to a question posed by its future use. Borren’s furniture is alive with European elegance and refinement, the very same that also characterises his interiors.
